STORY - View from the Vicarage

Vicarage Viewpoint for June 2009

My first Vicar was a man who had a passion for quoting sayings and ‘odd odes’; he would never let an occasion pass without him quoting some words of wisdom or a proverb. There are two that I remember very clearly:

Firstly (and this was one of his favourites) Cherish the Fellowship of the Sink. In other words treasure and prize those occasions when you are engaged in something practical and ordinary with members of the church’s family i.e. when you are washing-up after a church event, or when you are moving tables and chairs in preparation for a church gathering. In the life of the church it sometimes matters less exactly what the event is – it is more important that things are done together as a fellowship and family.

The second aphorism much loved by my Vicar was Cherish the Weakness of Limited Means. This little saying comes from a wonderful book called Enough is Enough which was written by a former Bishop of Winchester called John Taylor. The book is a call for Christians to have a simpler lifestyle, and that we should not be afraid to appear weak and foolish because God often reveals himself in weakness and fragility. Bishop Taylor also argued that the Church should never afraid to be seen doing so-called ‘ordinary things’ with limited resources – whatever the world might think about us.

As our time here in Newport draws to a close these two sayings have helped us to understand just how much we have been blessed through you all during the past seven and a half years. We have been in the sink together on many occasions and we have prized beyond measure the precious times of fellowship that we have enjoyed. As we look back it would be easy to concentrate on all the activities and projects – but what remains clearest in our minds and hearts is all that we have enjoyed through the fellowship and fun of being part of a church family where everyone plays their part.

Sometimes during the past 35 years of parish ministry we have struggled because of a lack of resources – human and practical – but has been our experience that through our weaknesses and shortcomings we have discovered God’s power and grace and the truth of the words the New Testament ‘God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness’.

After I left my first parish and I went to work for the Bishop as his Personal Chaplain I thought I had escaped from having a boss who had a penchant for quotations and sayings – but no! The Bishop was just as fond of maxims and sayings. His all-time favourite made a regular appearance when we repeatedly reminded me that as Christians we do not choose God – rather He chooses us in order that we might bear fruit.

From Christine and myself- thank you for all that you have given us since we have had the privilege to serve amongst you; thank you for all the times of fellowship and friendship that we have shared together; thank you for what we have been enabled to do together as a church family with limited human means but through God’s grace and strength.

To God be the glory and to Him alone!

Stephen and Christine.

NEWS - BELL RINGERS WANTED

LEARN A NEW HOBBY
Anyone living in Newport will be familiar with the sound of the bells ringing out on Sundays and other festive occasions.
The Minster Church of Sts Thomas has 12 bells, with the heaviest weighing 128 stones. It is amazing that with technique and not strength, such heavy bells can be rung with ease.
The Carisbrooke and Newport Bellringers ring the bells at both St Mary's and the Minster Church of Sts Thomas, Newport, and are always looking for new recruits to join their friendly team.
Bellringing is an enjoyable, social hobby and does not cost anything. How many hobbies are totally free? You can even be paid for ringing at weddings.
For all those who enjoy hearing the bells or who want to find out more about joining the bellringers, there is a chance to visit the bell tower at Newport and watch a demonstration of ringing technique during a special open day in February.
Visitors can even have a go at pulling a rope or two.
For more information about ringing at Newport contact Trish on 525268 or e-mail newport_bellringers@yahoo.co.uk

NEWS - New choir stalls

New choir stalls have been installed at the Minster. After careful consideration by the Church Council and Diocesan authorities, the Victorian Choir stalls have been replaced by new Choir Stalls that are moveable. This enables the centre of the church to be used for concerts, exhibitions and other public events. The new choir stalls were commissioned and donated by the family of Colonel Francis and Mrs Mew, lately of Kingston Manor - and they celebrate the contribution of the Mew family to the civic life of Newport over more than 150 years. The new pews were dedicated during the Inauguration Service of the Minster in September 2008.
